In partnership with UNFPA, in the premises of Club du Lac Tanganyika (Bujumbura City this) this Friday 14th October 2011, Her Excellency the First Lady of Burundi Rev. Denise Nkurunziza organized and launched a conference to which around 200 different religious leaders, governmental officers, diplomats, NGOs and Media were invited for a discussion seeking adequate ways to control demography in Burundi.
Due to the fact that 866 births are registered on a daily basis in Burundi, the conference was organized to share knowledge on the effects of the increasing birth rates on the child-mother health, on the family and the socioeconomic development of the nation in general; and then contribute to the best practices if not the propositions on how to resolve that demographic challenge in Burundi.
During the conference, it was noticed that the demographic explosion is coming up as a hindrance to the efforts of the government to promote reconciliation, sound healthy, the socioeconomic development, the protection of the environment and the Millennium Development Objective including the Vision Burundi 2025.
In Her speech, H.E. Rev. Denise Nkurunziza, said, “There is no way we can overlook the demographic challenge and its effects in our country. We obviously need teachings to know more about when life starts and the appropriate methods to be used to control fecundity effectively.”
Moreover, the Spouse of the Head of the State added, “It is of great help that different religious leaders set up a consistent framework and commission which can work on the best practices which do not jeopardize the Word of God; to offer their contribution to the way out of the demographic explosion; the government would be able to use some of your findings”.
